Senior Engineer – Mechanical Engineering (Platform Systems)
About the role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at BAE Systems, you will lead the design and development of hydraulic and mechanical systems for next-generation Royal Navy submarines. You'll take technical responsibility for system-level design, functional analysis, and modelling across critical safety-critical equipment including hydraulic power units, variable frequency drives, pumps, actuators, and control systems. Your role spans the full system lifecycle from concept through commissioning. You'll produce design documentation, verification and validation evidence, and safety justifications while engaging with suppliers and cross-functional project teams. You'll drive engineering governance through peer reviews and design reviews, ensuring high-integrity technical solutions that support both technical and financial project delivery. This position offers flexibility in how you shape your impact: whether through technical leadership and mentoring, people management of engineering teams, or deep specialist delivery in hydraulic and mechanical performance. You'll collaborate closely with systems engineers and stakeholders to steer design architecture across a major submarine programme, with opportunities to guide team growth and innovation.
